Extra Resources & Citing Lineage

"I am not the expert. I'm the experimenter, the scribe, and the guide. If you find anything amazing in this [course], it's thanks to the brilliant minds who acted as teachers, resources, critics, contributors, proofreaders, and references."

Quote from Tim Ferriss from Tools of Titans

I have collected information and learning from so many different places, but two big ones when it comes to business and specifically marketing have come from listening to hundreds of podcast episodes from the "Sean Wes" podcast and "The Goal Digger Podcast with Jenna Kutcher." I don't emulate or align with these teachers' values. I don't follow Sean Wes' work any longer, but I did check in and noticed he has literally said nothing about Black Lives Matter. It's difficult for me to recommend his podcast, but I want to be transparent of where part of my marketing education has come from. You, of course, are getting my favorite nuggets from this learning filtered through my own radical lens.

If anything, may this inspire you that no matter where or who you learn from, you have your own unique and important way to share it. Your voice matters! Additionally, however uncomfortable, it's important to cite our lineage and admit where we learned things to keep everything transparent and to not claim things that aren't ours to claim, this is how lineages and information get lost and history gets rewritten!

While I recommend looking into the resources below, I don't endorse every single thing about these resources. As always, practice your own judgement.

This resource list isn't comprehensive, but a place to start. I will likely add to it throughout the course. If there are any resources like books, blogs, social media, podcasts that have helped you with business skills, please comment them below.

Resources

Books

You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero (content warning: capitalistic, mentions that are fatphobic)

Dare to Lead by Brene Brown (audio is great, highly recommend this one)

The Middle Finger Project by Ash Ambirge (audio is great, a bit capitalistic, but she's hilarious and inspiring)

Radical Candor: How To Get What You Want by Saying What You Mean by Kim Scott (great if you are looking to hire and/or build a team)

The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin (gives a system for how to hold yourself accountable/do what you want to do)

Emergent Strategies by adrienne maree brown (THIS ONE. I'm rereading it and it seriously helps me ground my business in my values)

Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown (this one is yummy)

The 5 Personality Patterns by Steven Kessler (the one white man book I highly recommend, it has changed my life, I will reference it throughout the course. It condenses a lot of developmental theory and personality behavior in a really digestible highly practical way)

Polyvagal Theory in Therapy by Deb Dana (to help regulate your nervous system while doing big scary business things)

Anti-Racism Books

Rachel Cargle's Community Book List (this is a clickable link: this is a huge list. If anti-racism work is new to you, I recommend the podcast series: "Season 2 of Scene On Radio Podcast: Seeing White" as a place to start)

Podcasts

The Goal Digger Podcast with Jenna Kutcher (capitalistic)

Limitless Life with Melyssa Griffin (capitalistic)

Slaying the Status Quo in Total Style with Angel Phoenix Arsenal

Whenever you learn something or even feel inspired by someone, practice citing them. Again and again. This is something that I sometimes mess up, as a white femme under racial capitalism, I have been taught to be able to take without honoring or citing for my own personal gain. Collectively, we can do better!
